Technology Fail

My last post I complained that my camera was dead (or maybe the post before that) and it still is. For the life of me I can not find my charger! I would use my phone for photos.... but that died a sad death. Ugh I am sorting out a new phone tomorrow and will be back on the  blogging band wagon soon.

An apology and a pending arrival!

I know I was going to blog every day. I missed yesterday, I had a post planned to write but instead I got some VERY exciting news! Someone super close to me is pregnant! I know that is not really giving you a lot of detail, but if people in my real life read this then i could be letting the cat out of the bag before said person has a chance to tell other people!

So today I shall do a double post, one this morning and one this evening at normal time! I am so incredibly excited! Sorry for not  posting!

My toddler has taken over my house!

Unfortunately here in our house I am playing second fiddle. My things don't matter any more and everywhere I look there are Sophia's things. She has more books in my book shelves. There are more of her products beside the bath than mine. My handbag is more of a nappy bag and where there used to hang pictures of Nick and I or pictures of our friends now hangs a picture of Sophia.

We managed to be pretty minimalist for her first year of life. We moved across country when she was just a few months old (and new about the move prior to her birth) so people were fairly restrained when she was born and Christmas. However, this year we have not been so lucky. She is the first grandchild in Nick's family and although she is the first grandchild for my mother on my side! So people love to spoil her. As her birthday and Christmas are less than a month apart, I feel like we have gone from a appropriate amount of toys, books and clothes to being overrun.

When we moved here we bought a very small set of draws for her teeny clothes and it was perfect. However, now her clothes are a little bigger and everyone (myself included) bought her far too many they literally do not all fit in her dresser any more. Everyday I feel like my living room is overtaken by masses of toys. So last night I decided that I would take away some of them, and set the rest out for her to see (so she doesn't just pull them all out too see what is there).

My camera was not charged, so you will have to do with my crappy mobile pictures. I have taken pictures of the little areas I have set up with some of her favourite toys. I am hoping that this will encourage her to play with them rather than just becoming DESTRUCTOOOOOR (read that like you would announce a pro wrestler about to come out onto stage, it has much better effect that way). Note, this is nothing fancy, but just a little experiment to see if it changed the way she plays with her toys.

Here we have the storage boxes with books and a doll in a box reading nook, where Sophia can remove books and then pull out everything in storage boxes as well sit down and read some of her favourite books (all board books so I don't have to worry about leaving her to read them alone if she chooses). I have added the cushion and a cosy blanket for maximum comfort. Just to the left you can see that there is a puzzle for some more quiet play as well as her favourite doll all tucked up in her bed.

Then we have the farmyard corner. Sophia genuinely loves these animals and all the noises this farm makes. Usually we just have all the animals in a wee container and the farm sits there. I decided to make it into a real wee farmyard to see if this encourages her to pretend a little more, or at least explore the set further. I think I will sit with her and play with this one, I love it too and I love hearing her make her animal noises.

Finally I just have a few other toys she likes in her normal toy area with her toy box. She loves playing with her duplo, 'laptop' and rummaging in her toy box, so if she chooses it is still there for her to play with.

So there is what I have set up for her, I will report back to let you know how it went. The rest of her toys are safely in the other room. However this is where she plays the most. I hope this stops my house becoming a disaster zone in 2 minutes flat in the mornings (I doubt it, but it is worth a shot right?).

Wish me luck

Look what I can do!

Sophia is a year old now, A WHOLE FREAKING YEAR! She is on the move and beginning to talk. I thought I would do a quick brag update on what she can do. Okay, yes I am bragging, I think she is pretty extremely smart and I want to show off!

At the park by our local beach, just staring at the ocean

Firstly we will start off with words, her vocabulary currently consists of, Mama/Mum, Dada/Dad, Bubba, no, ta, Nana, cool, hi, pull, ball and I think she tries to say look. Which I don't think is too bad for just over 13 months. I must mention, when she says no. It is not just your normal no. No no, it has to be more, not only does she say no, she points her index finger, shakes her finger (well her hand) as well as her head and says no no no. This is really cute and funny but I have to try not to laugh. The times she does this is most is after she has done something she is not supposed to (like turning on the heated towel rail). As soon as she has done it, before I even get to speak, her wee finger comes out and she turns to me saying no no no (I must capture this on video for its full effect).

Photo: Cooool!!!!
Looking 'cooool' - her words not mine!

Her newest word is cool. I think it started because whenever she tries to put on our sunglasses we say 'coool'. Nick is also a sucker for saying "that's pretty cool isn't it". So now when she put on sunglasses she says 'cooooool', and yes it is a really long drawn out word (obviously she does this for effect). I thought this was a neat trick and she was just mimicking what we had said to her, but now she was also pointing at the baubles on our Christmas tree and saying 'cooool'. She has also done it with a few of her toys, I think she has picked up on the fact that it means something is pretty neato (ha, or something to that effect).
She can also make some animal sounds. She can bark like a dog whenever we ask her what sound a doggy makes, she doesn't say woof, she actually imitates a dogs bark! The other animals she can do are bird, cat, horse, monkey, pig, sheep and cow!

On the mobility front, she is still an avid crawler but we are seeing more and more walking. She will walk the whole length of our living room but she gets sick of it and then crawls. She can walk and has fantastic balance but she prefers crawling at this stage because it is faster for her!

First time having her hair up, she looks so grown up!

Sophia is LOVING music, and I have really noticed it more and more in the last few weeks, she really gets into the songs and rhymes we sing her and even requests them (starts doing the actions). She also has begun dancing, a lot. She does that awkward kinda baby jiggle, I really hope she gets her dads sense of rhythm and not mine, but if her dancing is anything to go by she might be out of luck!

We are still working on a few things, like sleeping through the night. Although, she is still nursing and I think sometimes she needs a wee comfort feed in the middle of the night. We are also working on how rough she is, she sometimes hits or grabs a little hard, usually when she is excited. She has become quite the wee tantrum thrower as well, when she doesn't get her way, her wee face will drop, the tears come and she drops to the ground, shortly followed by wanting to be picked up. However these are not things we dwell on, the sleep thing will work out and I know she is just excited when she is rough... The tantrum thing? I guess it is just a little kid thing, she doesn't get what she wants and she gets upset. She doesn't quite understand why she cant have it. We just deal with it by sticking to our guns about what we say but comforting her when she is upset.

Kissing the Meer cat at the zoo (through glass of course).
Sophia kisses things when she likes them (like toys, books, pictures etc)

That is about it from us, I have included some recent photos of the wee tike, just shots from her birthday, Christmas and times in between. Enjoy!

P.S I love these kind of updates on other peoples blogs, but please feel free to tell me if they don't interest you!

New year, New Start.

2012! I am glad that crap hole of a year is over! 2013 better be a good year or I think I might hibernate until things start going my way! A new year always feels like a fresh start to me. I feel like I can make this year what I want it to be. I am just off holiday and have been back a new days, so I thought I would take the chance to write about what I want this year to be for me and what I want to achieve.

So here are those dreaded resolutions that you make with great intentions but hardly ever see through, well not this year my friends! I am determined to see at least one of these through!

1. Write daily snippets of happy moments in my planner. Just things like "Had fun chasing Sophia around the coffee table today" or "Sophia loved smelling the flowers at the park". Those are a couple that are already in there. Just those make you smile moments recorded so you can look back and smile again.

2. Be a happier person. I am quite the negative Nancy. I will always see the worst in a situation before seeing any good. I also complain. Yes. I am THAT person. I don't always complain to people outside the home, but Nick cops a lot of it and I think that needs to stop. I know this will be a hard one, as it is a personality thing, but I really want to work on this!

3. Keep a tidier home. My home isn't dirty, but it is untidy. I hate folding washing and I let it pile up, and I am a shocker for only half doing a job! I leave things out that should be away and it frustrates the heck out of me. Especially when I want to go to bed in the evenings but I have to clean first. I want to create a clean as I go approach so it doesn't seem like such a chore.

4. Loose weight. Yes, I know, this is probably one everyone's list. Especially after the holiday season. But I am overweight. I am considered obese by my BMI maybe even morbidly obese. However, I am not going to stress about the weight loss, and I am just going to do little things that might help. Move a little more, eat a little less and just try to make healthier choices. Just start to love myself! Yet, if I want cake? You can bet I am going to eat cake. This year is not about stressing myself out.

All of these things seem pretty achievable to me, and I think they will have a positive impact not only on me but my family too. I am hoping that number 1 will help number 2 and that 2 will help number 4. Number 3 will just de-stress my life a little.

I also want to get some projects done that I have on the go and maybe blog or make a video (MAYBE! I do hate my voice on tape - Ok now I am singing Little things by 1D - Stay on task woman) and I want to make my blog more interesting and more frequent. Although my blog will still only be about things that I am passionate about... Namely Sophia.

Right, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and New Years that that this year kicks last years toushie!
